Does this feel familiar?

A young girl with blonde hair and blue eyes smiling and looking at the camera while playing outside on a sunny day. She is wearing a pink sleeveless dress with a pineapple design and green ruffle details, surrounded by green grass and trees.

Getting dressed, leaving the house, doing homework, eating, bathing, or going to bed can turn into arguments, tears, or power struggles.

You want practical guidance for setting limits, building connection, and supporting your child's emotional development.

You wonder what is typical for your child's age and what may need more attention.

You set limits, explain, negotiate, or try to stay patient, but the same behaviors keep coming back.

You want to feel more prepared and confident as your child enters a new developmental stage.

You want to understand why children behave the way they do, rather than simply learning how to stop difficult behaviors.

You are unsure how to respond to tantrums, defiance, anxiety, sibling conflict, or big emotions.

You find yourself overwhelmed by conflicting parenting advice and don't know what to trust.

Parenting education gives you the knowledge and developmental understanding to feel more confident in the everyday challenges of raising a child.

In our work together,

  • We will look beyond the behavior and explore what children may be communicating through it. A tantrum, withdrawal, aggression, anxiety, defiance, or difficulty separating is not always simply a behavior that needs to be corrected. Often, it is a child’s way of expressing something they do not yet have the words or emotional capacity to communicate directly.

  • We will also consider the relational world around the child, the ways family relationships, transitions, parental responses, expectations, and past experiences can shape how a child feels and behaves. Sometimes a child's behavior reflects an emotional need; sometimes it represents a developmental limitation; and sometimes it may be an attempt to cope with feelings that are simply too big to manage alone.

  • Understanding does not mean excusing difficult behavior or removing boundaries. Rather, it allows us to respond to behavior with greater curiosity and intention. When parents begin to understand what lies beneath a child's behavior, they can move from trying to simply stop the behavior to helping the child develop the emotional capacities that make different behavior possible.

  • Our goal is not to become perfect parents. It is to become more thoughtful and confident parents, better able to recognize what your child may be communicating, set appropriate boundaries while maintaining connection, and provide the emotional support your child needs to grow.

The more we understand what is happening underneath,

The more thoughtfully we can respond to what is happening on the surface.

What Is Psychoeducation?

Psychoeducation combines psychological knowledge with practical guidance. It helps parents understand child development, behavior, emotions, relationships, and family dynamics through a psychological lens.

Rather than focusing on treatment, psychoeducation focuses on learning and understanding. As parents gain insight into what lies beneath their child's behavior, they often feel more confident, connected, and effective in their parenting.

In our meetings, we will explore some of the most common challenges parents face, including:

  • Disobedience and power struggles

  • Anxiety, shyness, and withdrawal

  • Hyperactivity & Impulsiveness

  • Sibling conflict and family stress

  • Sleep and eating difficulties

  • Separation Anxiety and Kids’ Fears

  • Tantrums, Anger Outbursts & Meltdowns

  • Understanding Infancy & Early Motherhood

  • Bottle/Breast Feeding & Communication

  • Sleepless & Crying Babies

  • The Role of the Father in Early Parenthood

  • Transition to School & Morning Anxiety

  • Hair Pooling

  • Stealing & Telling lies

Meet Iliana, Parenting Therapist in Livonia Michigan

In my classes, I help parents make sense of behaviors that often feel overwhelming, confusing, or personally painful. Many parents come in feeling that their child’s tantrums, outbursts, defiance, withdrawal, or anxiety are a reflection of their own failure. One of the most important parts of our work is moving away from self-blame and toward understanding what the behavior is communicating.

Kids don’t need labeling… they need understanding

An acting out refers to when a child expresses difficult feelings through behavior rather than words. This can include tantrums, aggression, defiance, impulsivity, withdrawal, or intense emotional outbursts. From a psychoanalytic perspective, these behaviors are not random or intentional misbehavior, they are a form of communication about internal emotional states the child cannot yet name or manage.

By attending, you will gain:

  • A deeper understanding of your child
You will learn to see behavior through a developmental and psychoanalytic lens, helping you understand what your child may be communicating emotionally rather than focusing only on what they are doing.

  • Calmer everyday routines.
You will learn how to approach mornings, mealtimes, homework, bathing, bedtime, and transitions with greater structure and less conflict.

  • More clarity and confidence in parenting
As confusion turns into understanding, you will feel more grounded in your responses and less caught in cycles of guilt, frustration, or self-blame.

  • Greater consistency in your parenting.
You will develop a shared understanding of your child’s needs and more effective ways for both parents to respond, even when your parenting styles differ.

  • A stronger and more connected relationship with your child
When behavior is understood rather than fought against, parents are able to respond with greater emotional presence, which supports regulation, trust, and connection over time.
